Know Your Numbers!

Hello people! I hope everything is going well. Life can be so interesting if we open our minds and eyes to the intriguing world around us. In the last one year, I have tried different fruits and vegetables that I had never even known existed. I thought I had done a great job at exploring new territories and then came along Nigerian jackfruit.

A fruit that weighs between 12 and 20KG. My curiosity got the better of me, I had to pre-order one. A jackfruit tree produces about only ten and it ripens one at a time. I work with children so what a great excuse to buy one, the children will be intrigued and most definitely enjoy the experience of being unable to lift and eat this unusual fruit. I can already see them telling everyone who cares to listen about it. Don’t you just love children?

Learn to look at healthy living as an adventure, as well as an opportunity to know more. Let’s do this!

Do you know your Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar status? These are vital numbers that anyone above 35 years should know and it does not matter that you feel well. Blood Pressure, which is a more familiar territory to me, can be high and you may have no idea. That is why high BP (blood pressure) is termed the silent killer.

Knowing your numbers is “A stitch in time saves nine”.

I was only 27years old the first time my BP was flagged, thanks to a pre-employment medical check. If I knew back then what I know now, I could have been saved the many challenges of having HPB (high blood pressure).

BP measures how hard your blood pushes its way through your body. If it’s normal, there is no strain on the arteries. If it is high, there’s a lot of strain on the body which is dangerous. It can lead to heart attacks, vascular dementia, aortic aneurysms and kidney disease. Low BP can also affect health but is often less dangerous. It can cause dizziness and fainting which can lead to head injuries if there’s a fall. It can also be a sign of other sicknesses.

The good news is that both low and high BP can be treated with medication and/or change in diet/lifestyle. A regular check can help with early diagnosis before the risk becomes high. A good reading is 120/80 or less even though it is relative based on age and health status, which is another reason it’s important to know one’s status.

Some symptoms of HBP are headaches, disturbed vision, irregular heartbeat, chestpain, fatigue, confusion, poor memory and nausea. Our bodies are able to heal themselves if the conditions are right. The good thing is we are in control of these conditions. The very first and most important step is to know your status, check your numbers. Then you will be in a position to act if need be.

If your numbers are high, follow your doctor’s directive and begin a lifestyle change. However, you do not need to have a HBP to live healthy, every single human body deserves it. We’ve all got only one shot at it. Love you all.
